The New Primitive: Milk Paint Dresser Makeover in Chippy Trophy

I have always been in love with that primitive, hundred-years-old, covered-in-ten-layers-of-paint look. I mean, just imagine the stories those pieces could tell... Sometimes we're lucky enough to find the true, original, primitive pieces. And sometimes, we create our own. This dresser was structurally in good shape, but was living out her life in a small-town secondhand store. She looked sad, so we thought we'd best take her home. She came with some scars; her veneer was peeling a bit on each side. We thought that set her up perfectly for a chippy finish.   As much as I love keeping original hardware on pieces like this, even after they are refinished, she was missing on pull on a top drawer, and a ring was missing off one of the other pulls. Boo. Check out the detail and lines on the base of this piece. Gorgeous! She got one coat of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Trophy. See how the chipping has just started, below? ooooooh, it makes me so excited! Please ignore my high-tech paint studio. It's our dining room, with some old moving boxes from the basement. Chad complains a lot less about me painting in the house, now that I'm using Milk Paint {no smell, and zero-VOCs}. In fact, he even moved the dresser inside for me. I smoothed the first coat out with a high-grit {220} sandpaper, just to get off some of the flakes, and gave her a second coat of Trophy, then followed with more sandpaper. I'm dying over here. Could it look any more original? Does anyone else find it a little funny that we put so much effort into making something old look even older and in poorer condition than it probably was to start? I like to just think positive, and consider it giving her more character. Now she's truly one-of-a-kind. Doesn't the paint look like it's been there for 100 years?? A coat of clear wax, and she'll be all finished and ready for a new home. Ugh, my good camera broke. Like, broke & needs to be sent away to be fixed & I want to cry. So, you get iPhone photos. Sorry {for me & you}. Can you tell we pushed our dining room table out of the way just to take some staged shots? Yep, those chairs in the reflection in the window don't really belong there.
