    Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Color of the Month: Mustard Seed Yellow

    If you follow Carver Junk Company on Facebook, you know that we offer 10% off the Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint colors of the month. Lucky you, November has two colors of the month! If you follow Miss Mustard Seed anywhere online, you probably know that all of her paint colors have a story. While Mustard Seed Yellow and Curio may not have the most interesting stories behind their names, they are one of my favorite colors, and one of the most versatile colors of the paint line, respectively. Below are the details on MSY {Mustard Seed Yellow...we like abbreviations around here...}. I'll give Curio it's own post later this week {or realistically, maybe later this month.}

    Mustard Seed Yellow

    Named after the color of... {surprise} ...seeds from mustard plants. Yellow_Mustard_Seed Miss Mustard Seed {Marian} describes her Mustard Seed Yellow as a "warm, buttery yellow. It's bright without being too bold and it's a perfect 'happy yellow.'" mustard-seed-yellow-collage1 mustard-seed-yellow-sample-board I love the variety available within the MMS paint line, when using different top coats over the same color. The Golden Sycamore put together these awesome samples to show how MSY looks with each of the available top coats. Here are some of our favorite Mustard Seed Yellow projects {via Pinterest} [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="375"] Painted in Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Mustard Seed Yellow, finished with Antiquing Wax. "Up North" Pinspiration, and Our Weekend Plans

    If you live in Minnesota, you know what Up North means. It's cabin season around here, and Memorial Day weekend is officially "open season."  We are headed up to a big junk show in Brainerd, MN - about 150 miles north of Carver. We're packing up two large trailers this week {thankfully, Chad's parents are hauling one up for us} and heading North for a long weekend. Here's the detail on the sale, if you'll be Up North, too! While we've been busy stocking the store for our regular sales, we've been keeping an eye out for cabin-style goods as well. Here's some of our Pinspiration:

    Eulalie's Sky Corner Table

    Eulalie's Sky is the Color of the Month {along with Linen} for Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint, in May. So, of course, I just had to try it out {admittedly, for the first time}!  And, much like the piece I did in Luckett's Green last month, I am unexpectedly, crazy in love with it! First, Eulalie's Sky is named after the sky in a painting of a cow that hangs above Marian's {Miss Mustard Seed} buffet. The cow in the painting is named Eulalie, and her sky is this perfect pale blue color, with a slight hint of green. [caption id="attachment_426" align="aligncenter" width="665"] Eulalie's Sky Collage |Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint[/caption] I wanted to paint a small piece, to check the amount of coverage I could get from one of our new sample size jars. Each jar has about 3 Tbsp of milk paint powder. Seriously, how cute are these tester jars?!  {on a side note - can you see that the color sticker on the bag isn't quite true to color? And neither is the powdered paint? It comes together when it's mixed, though!} Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint | Eulalie's Sky | 1 quart and Tester jars |Carver Junk Company Here is the table I decided to paint. Chad picked it up from a thrift store, and I thought it would be about the perfect size for the 3 tbsp of paint in a tester-size jar. Small Corner Table Before Milk Paint | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove.[/caption] Here is Eulalie's Sky in powder form. It's a creamy color - not at all bluish/teal! But don't worry.... Eulalie's Sky Milk Paint Sample Size Jar | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove. As a reminder, you should plop the powder onto another surface, add your water, and then put the powder back in - the water should always go into the container first! Eulalie's Sky Milk Paint Sample Size Jar | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove. That's more like it!  This is 3 Tbsp of powder, and 3 Tbsp of water - a 1:1 ratio that's used for a general paint finish. Eulalie's Sky Milk Paint Sample Size Jar | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove. Then, I added bonding agent. After mixing the powder into the water, I had about 1/2 jar full of paint. So I filled it the rest of the way with bonding agent. You saw how shiny that table was - if I didn't use bonding agent, I surely would have had a chippy mess {vs. a cute intentionally-chipped table} on my hands. Can you believe this all fits in that perfect little jar??  Oh, and yes - the Target bag is my very sophisticated way of spill-proofing while I'm painting in the dining room. Eulalie's Sky Milk Paint Sample Size Jar | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove. I finished her up, sanded with a 100-grit sandpaper in a circular motion to get that crazy-distressed look, added some antiquing wax to the detailed parts, and then finished the whole thing with clear furniture wax!  We didn't offer her up for sale until the store opened the following Saturday morning, and she was the FIRST THING out the door!  <3 Eulalie's Sky Milk Paint Corner Table | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. Relove. We used to sell tester/sample size bags with 2 Tbsp of paint for $6 each. We decided we wanted to give everyone an opportunity to try out this paint, so changed over to the jars, with an extra Tbsp of paint, and they are only $4.99 each at the store! Stop in during our May 15-18 sale, and try a color you might not otherwise have tried!

    Coffee Table Color Wash with Luckett's Green Milk Paint

    I picked up this coffee table at a local thrift store, with every intention of refinishing the top in a dark stain, and painting the base in a neutral shade of white. As with many well-laid plans, the end result was nowhere near my starting vision! And, thank goodness. I went waaaaaaay outside of my comfort zone on this one, and....surprise!....I sort of love her. This is how she started {well, sort of}. Why am I so bad at taking Before photos??  So, 3/4 of the photo is how she started. The other 1/4 was step 1 of my mission to refinish the top. It's obviously a veneer top, so I had to be careful not to sand too far down - just enough to remove the beat-up old finish. That also meant she was left with some scars from deep scratches I just couldn't fully remove. We call those Character. 20140421-180943.jpg I was too impatient to sand the whole top before seeing how it would polish up. I ran out to the garage and grabbed my can of Dark Walnut stain. Mixed it up, applied it, and ..... it didn't look anything like Dark Walnut. Turns out, I left it out in the {un-heated} garage all winter, and it'd gone bad. Chad had all of the good cans across town in our workshop. Ugh. 20140421-181000.jpg   Before I jumped to a decision on the top, I thought I'd try a color wash {a paint mixture with high water content, that goes on like a stain} on the base of the table, using some Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Luckett's Green that I happened to have in the house from a birdhouse painting project I did the previous week. 20140421-181014.jpg   Hm. Not in love. Maybe with another coat. 20140421-181032.jpg   It's a terrible photo, but nope - still not the look I wanted. So, a complete change of course, I decided to sand down the remaining top, do the color wash on the now raw wood, and a full-color paint on the base. 20140421-181048.jpg   Here she is, after painting and sanding, but before a finishing coat. 20140421-181105.jpg   I did not use a bonding agent on the base, so I got some nice chippyness over the original table finish. Awesome! 20140421-181120.jpg   Here she is, after a top coat of clear furniture wax. Look at how much more the color pops on her base after adding that finishing coat! Perfectly springy and green, feminine and functional. 20140421-181136.jpgLuckett's Green Milk Paint Coffee Table | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose.
