    Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Color of the Month: Mustard Seed Yellow

    If you follow Carver Junk Company on Facebook, you know that we offer 10% off the Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint colors of the month. Lucky you, November has two colors of the month! If you follow Miss Mustard Seed anywhere online, you probably know that all of her paint colors have a story. While Mustard Seed Yellow and Curio may not have the most interesting stories behind their names, they are one of my favorite colors, and one of the most versatile colors of the paint line, respectively. Below are the details on MSY {Mustard Seed Yellow...we like abbreviations around here...}. I'll give Curio it's own post later this week {or realistically, maybe later this month.}

    Mustard Seed Yellow

    Named after the color of... {surprise} ...seeds from mustard plants. Yellow_Mustard_Seed Miss Mustard Seed {Marian} describes her Mustard Seed Yellow as a "warm, buttery yellow. It's bright without being too bold and it's a perfect 'happy yellow.'" mustard-seed-yellow-collage1 mustard-seed-yellow-sample-board I love the variety available within the MMS paint line, when using different top coats over the same color. The Golden Sycamore put together these awesome samples to show how MSY looks with each of the available top coats. Here are some of our favorite Mustard Seed Yellow projects {via Pinterest} [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="375"] Painted in Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Mustard Seed Yellow, finished with Antiquing Wax. Coffee Table Color Wash with Luckett's Green Milk Paint

    I picked up this coffee table at a local thrift store, with every intention of refinishing the top in a dark stain, and painting the base in a neutral shade of white. As with many well-laid plans, the end result was nowhere near my starting vision! And, thank goodness. I went waaaaaaay outside of my comfort zone on this one, and....surprise!....I sort of love her. This is how she started {well, sort of}. Why am I so bad at taking Before photos??  So, 3/4 of the photo is how she started. The other 1/4 was step 1 of my mission to refinish the top. It's obviously a veneer top, so I had to be careful not to sand too far down - just enough to remove the beat-up old finish. That also meant she was left with some scars from deep scratches I just couldn't fully remove. We call those Character. 20140421-180943.jpg I was too impatient to sand the whole top before seeing how it would polish up. I ran out to the garage and grabbed my can of Dark Walnut stain. Mixed it up, applied it, and ..... it didn't look anything like Dark Walnut. Turns out, I left it out in the {un-heated} garage all winter, and it'd gone bad. Chad had all of the good cans across town in our workshop. Ugh. 20140421-181000.jpg   Before I jumped to a decision on the top, I thought I'd try a color wash {a paint mixture with high water content, that goes on like a stain} on the base of the table, using some Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in Luckett's Green that I happened to have in the house from a birdhouse painting project I did the previous week. 20140421-181014.jpg   Hm. Not in love. Maybe with another coat. 20140421-181032.jpg   It's a terrible photo, but nope - still not the look I wanted. So, a complete change of course, I decided to sand down the remaining top, do the color wash on the now raw wood, and a full-color paint on the base. 20140421-181048.jpg   Here she is, after painting and sanding, but before a finishing coat. 20140421-181105.jpg   I did not use a bonding agent on the base, so I got some nice chippyness over the original table finish. Awesome! 20140421-181120.jpg   Here she is, after a top coat of clear furniture wax. Look at how much more the color pops on her base after adding that finishing coat! Perfectly springy and green, feminine and functional. 20140421-181136.jpgLuckett's Green Milk Paint Coffee Table | Carver Junk Company | Recycle. Repurpose. The New Primitive: Milk Paint Dresser Makeover in Chippy Trophy

    I have always been in love with that primitive, hundred-years-old, covered-in-ten-layers-of-paint look. I mean, just imagine the stories those pieces could tell... Sometimes we're lucky enough to find the true, original, primitive pieces. And sometimes, we create our own. This dresser was structurally in good shape, but was living out her life in a small-town secondhand store. She looked sad, so we thought we'd best take her home. She came with some scars; her veneer was peeling a bit on each side. We thought that set her up perfectly for a chippy finish. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser   As much as I love keeping original hardware on pieces like this, even after they are refinished, she was missing on pull on a top drawer, and a ring was missing off one of the other pulls. Boo. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Check out the detail and lines on the base of this piece. Gorgeous! Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser She got one coat of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Trophy. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser See how the chipping has just started, below? ooooooh, it makes me so excited! Please ignore my high-tech paint studio. It's our dining room, with some old moving boxes from the basement. Chad complains a lot less about me painting in the house, now that I'm using Milk Paint {no smell, and zero-VOCs}. In fact, he even moved the dresser inside for me. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser I smoothed the first coat out with a high-grit {220} sandpaper, just to get off some of the flakes, and gave her a second coat of Trophy, then followed with more sandpaper. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser I'm dying over here. Could it look any more original? Does anyone else find it a little funny that we put so much effort into making something old look even older and in poorer condition than it probably was to start? I like to just think positive, and consider it giving her more character. Now she's truly one-of-a-kind. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Doesn't the paint look like it's been there for 100 years?? A coat of clear wax, and she'll be all finished and ready for a new home. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Ugh, my good camera broke. Like, broke & needs to be sent away to be fixed & I want to cry. So, you get iPhone photos. Sorry {for me & you}. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Can you tell we pushed our dining room table out of the way just to take some staged shots? Yep, those chairs in the reflection in the window don't really belong there. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Who wants to take her home, before I decide to keep her?? P.S. Trophy is the Miss Mustard Seed Color of the Month for March, which means quarts of Trophy are 10% off. Carver Junk Company Milk Paint Trophy Dresser Is the chippy look for you? Would you put her in a bedroom as a dresser? In a dining room as a buffet? Maybe as a TV/Media stand?
